I love my Scoutguard SG550 but there are a couple of times each day where it seems confused as to whether or not it should be shooting on infared mode or without infared. These times are a bit after sunrise, and right around sunset. What I have been ending up with are pictures that look like Negative exposures. Here is an example below. Anyone else seen this issue? I was going to contact Scoutguard to see if they have any recommendations.

I pulled the memory card from my Scoutguard SG550 this evening. I was surprised to see this nice buck pictured in the video below. This buck passed in front of my Scoutguard SG550 this morning. This makes the second buck I've seen in the last week that still hasn't dropped its rack yet. I'm happy to see that this buck made it through the late bow season. He should be a pretty respectable buck when the bow season opens this fall. I would think he should be dropping his rack any day now. Looks like I'll be doing some shed hunting this weekend. March 15th and Some Bucks Still Have Their Racks

While checking my Scoutguard SG550 this week, I was surprised to see this little buck still had its rack. In my neck of the woods, they have typically all dropped by now. Maybe this little guy is just a slow starter. Or, this may explain why I have come up empty handed each time I've gone out shed hunting this year. Maybe I'll try again this weekend.

How about you? Are you still seeing bucks with their racks, or have you found any sheds yet?

Scoutguard SG550 – What it Lacks

Don't get me wrong. I love my ScoutGuard SG550. It has a great compact design. The battery life and trigger speed are good. The image quality is nice. I could go on and on about it.

But there is one feature that I wish it had, and that is an external LCD. I have my SG550 in the woods right behind my house currently. I'm always out taking walks in the woods, and never know if it is worth pulling that memory card out to check the images or not. I pulled it the other day and only had a few pictures on it. I would have been better off saving my time and just leaving it in there for a few more days.

I guess that HCO had to make some sacrifices to keep this camera so small. The remote control is easy to use and can be quickly connected to check the camera status. The only problem is that you have to have it on you when you check your cam.

If that is the only complaint or drawback that I can identify with the Scoutguard SG550, then that says a lot for it. The SG550 might be small, but it is packed full of features.

The quality of pictures is decent, and the camera is highly configurable. The Scoutguard SG550 is by far the best performer in its price range.

Scoutguard SG550 Update

If you purchased your Scoutguard SG550 prior to July 2008 then you might need to update your firmware.

Firmware is the 'computer program' installed on the chips in your game camera. It controls how the camera operates and what it is capable of doing. Occasionally firmware updates are provided for electronics that either enhance features, or correct problems.

The process of updating your firmware is easy with Scoutguards camera. It is as simple as putting the update file on your SD card and inserting it in your computer. Plug in the remote and power the camera on. Follow the onscreen prompts, and wait for an update message to be displayed on your remote. Pretty simple huh? It only takes about 40 seconds to complete.
