March 15th and Some Bucks Still Have Their Racks

March 20th, 2009 by Deer Tracking Cameras

While checking my Scoutguard SG550 this week, I was surprised to see this little buck still had its rack. In my neck of the woods, they have typically all dropped by now. Maybe this little guy is just a slow starter. Or, this may explain why I have come up empty handed each time I've gone out shed hunting this year. Maybe I'll try again this weekend.

How about you? Are you still seeing bucks with their racks, or have you found any sheds yet?

Coyote Video on Scoutguard SG550

March 18th, 2009 by Deer Tracking Cameras

Here is a video that I captured a few days ago with my Scoutguard SG550. It is of two coyotes. The first passes out of the field of view right at the beginning of the video. My wife was a little disturbed to see these coyotes as the video was captured about 60 yards from my back porch. The coyote population is on the rise.

Scoutguard SG550 – What it Lacks

Don't get me wrong. I love my ScoutGuard SG550. It has a great compact design. The battery life and trigger speed are good. The image quality is nice. I could go on and on about it.

But there is one feature that I wish it had, and that is an external LCD. I have my SG550 in the woods right behind my house currently. I'm always out taking walks in the woods, and never know if it is worth pulling that memory card out to check the images or not. I pulled it the other day and only had a few pictures on it. I would have been better off saving my time and just leaving it in there for a few more days.

I guess that HCO had to make some sacrifices to keep this camera so small. The remote control is easy to use and can be quickly connected to check the camera status. The only problem is that you have to have it on you when you check your cam.

If that is the only complaint or drawback that I can identify with the Scoutguard SG550, then that says a lot for it. The SG550 might be small, but it is packed full of features.

Feeling Secure with CAMLOCKbox

CAMLOCKbox

CAMLOCKbox

This is an exciting day!  Not only because I received my new ScoutGuard SG550, but because my CAMLOCKbox Security Lock Box arrived!  I'm so impressed by the quality and design of my CAMLOCKbox, that I am compelled to write about it before I even set up my SG550 that it is designed to house.

SG550 in the CAMLOCKbox

What struck me the most was the solid construction and precision design of the enclosure.  My SG550 perfectly fit inside this all steel lockbox, just like a nut fits on a bolt.  The CAMLOCKbox is finished with a powdercoating and camo pattern.  The design of the outer cover allowed it to join seamlessly with the main housing.  Once my camera was enclosed in the housing, only the PIR, lense, and infared emitters were exposed through the cutout.  This security box can be locked via a padlock on the front, or by passing a cable lock through the center of the box.  Either method locks the case tight, and your camera is protected inside.

Fits Like a Glove

The cutout on the bottom is perfectly aligned with the external power jack of my ScoutGuard.  Cutouts in the rear of the housing allow the game camera's strap, or a bungee to be used to position the camera on a tree.  I like the fact that this still allows you to fine tune the positioning of your camera after hanging.  The screw holes in the rear of the box give you the ability to secure your camera to a flat surface, like a fence post or barn; or screws can be shot into a tree for added security.
